Why don't I see the popup?
The popup is only shown if
navigator.language
is set to one of the aforementioned languages.
JavaScript must be enabled!
What does the popup say?
“Are you joining us from russia?
Is it really the russian people who want war against their Ukrainian brothers and sisters?
Or is it perhaps just an old fool from Red Square who longs for the days of the Cold War, mutual hostility
and the nuclear arms race?

Does the popup work without JavaScript?
On the client side, the browser's language setting cannot be checked without JavaScript.
However, if you want to show the popup to all visitors (for example because your website is in russian),
then JavaScript is not needed.
(The popup can be closed without JavaScript.)
Just set the
open
attribute on the popup.
If you control the server, you can also check the
Accept-Language
header and adjust the returned HTML and CSS accordingly. This doesn't require JavaScript, but is out of scope
for this demo.
What does the white-blue-white flag mean?
You may have noticed that hovering over the popup's dismiss-button makes the russian flag transform into
a white-blue-white flag.
It has been used by russian partisans and anti-war protesters as a symbol of opposition against
the invasion of Ukraine.
